The “sticks” in this agate were originally Aragonite crystals that got replaced by Silica. Stones that are created from the replacement of crystals are categorized as pseudomorphs.
Pseudomorphs literally translate to “false forms”, and they get this name because the minerals that make up these stones do not naturally take on the form that we see them in. They only look this way because they replaced the naturally occurring crystal that used to be there. In this case the crystal that was replaces was Aragonite, which naturally forms in a long thin "stick-like" manner, hence the name Stick Agate.
